The island was dynamited in 1968; its shrine still stands in Mapo

Once a year, in the first lunar month, a small painted hall on a Mapo hillside fills with people whose grandparents were evicted from an island that no longer holds houses. The island is Bamseom (밤섬), and the hall is its bugundang (부군당), a village shrine that kept its congregation after the village itself was removed.

An island taken apart for rock

In February 1968, Bamseom was blasted with dynamite, and the stone was carried across the water to build the embankment that turned Yeouido from a sandbank into a district. The roughly four hundred islanders were resettled in Changjeon-dong (창전동), on the Mapo slope facing the river they had fished, ferried and grown herbs on.

They were moved together, which is the detail that matters here. A village scattered loses its calendar; a village relocated in one piece can carry it up a hill and set it down again.

What a bugundang is, and what this one kept

A bugundang is not a temple and not a monument. It is a neighbourhood hall for a tutelary spirit, the kind that once stood in most riverside settlements around Seoul and was mostly absorbed by apartment construction. This one survived with its rite intact, and the yearly ceremony held here is registered as Seoul intangible cultural heritage.

On an ordinary afternoon the hall is quiet and modest: a tiled roof, a walled yard, laundry and parked scooters on the lane outside. The scale is the point. Nothing about it announces that it is the last standing address of a place erased from the map.

The village was removed in a single day. The calendar it kept was not.

Making the detour worthwhile

Gwangheungchang Station on Line 6 leaves you a few minutes below the shrine, in a neighbourhood of low brick houses, rice-cake shops and stairs that cut between streets. Walk the lanes first, then go down to the river and out onto Seogang Bridge.

From the bridge you can see Bamseom again. Silt rebuilt it into a wooded sandbar, herons and ducks moved in, and it is now a protected wetland closed to people. You can look at it for as long as you like, which is more than the villagers on the hill behind you were ever offered.
