The village shrines hiding above Seoul's apartment blocks, and how to read them

Above Itaewon, past the last convenience store on the slope, the road narrows and then stops at a flight of stone steps. At the top there is a tiled roof, a courtyard about the size of a parking space, and a wooden hall that has stood on that ground, in one form or another, since the neighborhood below was farmland and ferry traffic.

What a bugundang is

A bugundang (부군당) is a village tutelary shrine — a hall built to hold the guardian spirit of one specific patch of ground. It is not a Buddhist temple and not a Confucian ancestral hall, and it belongs to the residents rather than to a clergy. Seoul once had dozens of them strung along the Han River, in the ferry landings and ice-cutting settlements that later became Yongsan and Seobinggo.

Roughly a dozen survive. They were absorbed by the city rather than cleared for it, which is why the ones still standing are usually hemmed in by retaining walls, parking ramps and apartment blocks. The Itaewon shrine sits inside a small public park, Bugundang Yeoksa Gongwon (부군당역사공원), a few minutes uphill from the main strip.

Reading a closed door

The hall itself is normally shut, and that is not a disappointment — the courtyard is the text. Look at the painted beams under the eaves, at the age of the trees relative to everything around them, at the swept ground. Most shrines keep a notice board by the gate listing the annual rite, with the date written in the lunar calendar rather than the solar one.

It is not a monument to a village. It is what is left of one.

Going without intruding

Come in daylight, on foot, and treat the courtyard as someone's front yard rather than a viewpoint. Photographs of the exterior are ordinary; standing on the step to shoot through the door is not. Ten minutes is enough, and the walk back down through Yongsan's older lanes — low brick houses, a barber pole, a hill that keeps turning — is the second half of the detour.
