Zhenbeibu, the desert film city outside Yinchuan that never repairs a wall

The wind at Zhenbeibu (镇北堡) arrives most afternoons and takes a little more of the walls with it each time. Forty minutes northwest of Yinchuan, on the gravel apron below the Helan Shan (贺兰山), sits a film city built out of two collapsed frontier forts — and the collapse is the point.

Abandoned twice, then rented out

The older enclosure went up in the Ming as a garrison post, one link in a chain of rammed-earth forts watching the plain. An earthquake brought much of it down; a second fort was raised beside it under the Qing, and that one emptied out in its turn. For most of the twentieth century both stood roofless in the scrub, useful to goats and to nobody else.

What the camera wanted

In 1987 Red Sorghum (红高粱) built a distillery courtyard inside the older walls, and the ruins acquired a second career. A 1995 comedy, A Chinese Odyssey (大话西游), used the gate and the parapet above it, and that short stretch of earth is where most visitors now point their phones. Later sets stand between the two forts: a wine workshop with vats and blue cloth banners, a stone-walled inn, a street that is facade and nothing behind it.

Nothing here is restored. The weather is the art department.

A morning, and the light

Go early. The gates open around eight, the air is still, and low sun rakes the loess in a way no afternoon returns. Two hours covers both forts at a walking pace, three if you stop for the sorghum wine poured in small cups near the workshop set. Tickets run around a hundred yuan; tourist buses leave from central Yinchuan, though a taxi is simpler for two.

Pair it with what else sits under the same ridge — the rock carvings at Helankou (贺兰口) to the north, the Western Xia tombs (西夏王陵) on the way back. All three are dry-country sites with almost no shade, and the dust finds cameras before it finds you.
