In Yuwaku, a hot-spring hamlet holds the October festival an anime invented

A festival that did not exist in 2010 now closes the road through Yuwaku every October. It was written for an anime first — a set piece, a plot device, a reason for the characters to stay up late. The town watched it air and decided to build it.

Where the lanterns go up

Yuwaku Onsen sits in a fold of the hills southeast of Kanazawa, under an hour by Hokutetsu bus from the station's east side. There is a handful of inns, a public bath, and a small pond, Gyokusen-ko, that holds the treeline upside down on still mornings. In 2011 the studio P.A. Works — based over the prefectural line in Nanto, Toyama — set the series Hanasaku Iroha (花咲くいろは) here, renaming the hamlet Yunosagi and inventing an autumn festival for its final act.

The town said yes

That same October, Yuwaku held one. Bonbori (ぼんぼり) — paper-shaded lanterns on wooden posts — line the road climbing to Yuwaku Inari-jinja, and visitors write wishes on slips of paper that are carried up and burned after dark. It has run every October since. The people shouldering the portable shrine are the innkeepers and their neighbours, not hired staff.

What shares the same street

Yuwaku had borrowed a romance before. The painter and poet Takehisa Yumeji stayed here in 1917 with Kasai Hikono, and a small museum on the main road keeps his work and that season. The public bath, Shirasagi-no-yu, takes day visitors for a few hundred yen, which is the honest way to spend an afternoon if you are not staying the night.

Going without crowding it

Rooms on festival weekend go months ahead, so most people come up by bus and leave on the last one down. The inns are working inns: their entrance halls are for guests who have checked in. Photograph the lantern road and the shrine steps, and let the doorways alone. February is the other good answer — snow on the posts, nobody there, the same water.
