Two days on Jeju's east coast without renting a car

Every arrival at Jeju International Airport funnels toward the same corridor of rental desks, and underneath that corridor sits an assumption: the island does not work without a car. Along the east coast, between Gimnyeong (김녕) and Seongsan, the assumption is simply wrong. Two bus routes and a pair of legs cover the whole stretch, and the pace they impose turns out to be the reason to do it this way.

Day one, Gimnyeong to Sehwa

Take the 101 express from the airport, or the 201 from the intercity terminal in Jeju City; the first skips most of the coast, the second stops at all of it. Get off at Gimnyeong Seongsegi Beach, where the water sits an implausible green over white shell sand and the turbines turn slowly behind the dunes.

From there, walk east toward Woljeong (월정) along the shore road rather than riding it. The distance is under an hour on foot, the wind comes off the water the entire way, and the cafés facing the beach are better arrived at slowly than parked in front of.

Sehwa, and a market that keeps its own calendar

Sehwa (세화) is where the first day should end. Its five-day market, an oiljang (오일장), sets up beside the sea on dates ending in five and zero: dried gulfweed in bundles, cutlass fish laid flat on ice, tangerines by the crate, and grandmothers selling from mats rather than stalls.

Day two, Hado to Seongsan

Start at the Haenyeo Museum in Hado-ri (하도리), which documents the women who dive without tanks and is closed on Mondays. Behind it, Olle (올레) Route 21 runs south through wetlands and low basalt walls toward Jongdal, a flat and unhurried walk with almost no shade.

Catch the 201 onward to Seongsan and climb Ilchulbong late in the afternoon instead of at dawn. The crater rim empties out by then, the light lands sideways on the tuff cone, and the ferry terminal for Udo is a short walk from the base if you want a third day.

What the timetable asks of you
