The bag has a district printed on it: how Korea throws things away

The first surprise about throwing something away in Korea is that the bag has a place name printed on it. Jongno, Mapo, Seongdong — the district where it was sold, and the only district where it will be collected. Everything else follows from that.

The bag is the fee

It is called a 종량제 봉투 (jongnyangje bongtu), a volume-rate bag, and the price at the register is the disposal fee itself. That is why one bought in Mapo is not valid two subway stops away. Sizes run from 3 litres to 20, and the small ones cost a few hundred won — you pay for how much you throw out.

Convenience stores sell them, but not from the shelves; they live behind the counter with the cigarettes. 종량제 봉투 주세요 (jongnyangje bongtu juseyo) is enough, and a hand held up at roughly the size you want settles the rest.

What never goes in it

Food waste is a separate stream with its own container: a lidded bin by the building gate, or in newer buildings a machine that weighs what you drop in. The working rule is the one Korean households use themselves.

If an animal could eat it, it is food waste. If it could break a tooth, it is not.

So bones, shellfish, egg shells and fruit pits go into the paid bag with everything else. Recycling itself costs nothing but asks more: boxes flattened and tape stripped, bottles rinsed, labels peeled, caps separated. A bag of mixed recycling is the one thing that reliably gets left behind.

Put it out after dark

Most neighbourhoods collect at night, so bags go out in the evening rather than the morning, often only on set days posted in Korean by the gate. If you are renting an apartment for a week, ask your host which nights; there is usually a partly used roll under the sink already. Hotels absorb all of this, which is why the system stays invisible until the first time you have a kitchen.
